Madrid, December 2025—The Spanish Society of Pediatric Palliative Care (PEDPAL) and Tandem Health have entered a new collaboration to study how clinical AI can support documentation in pediatric palliative home care. The project marks the first initiative of its kind in Europe and builds on work already started at Son Espases University Hospital in the Balearic Islands.
PEDPAL brings deep clinical leadership in a field where communication with families is constant, sensitive, and central to care. Tandem brings clinical AI technology that helps professionals reduce administrative work by 1-2 hours every day, giving teams more time for patient care.
Home based pediatric palliative care involves long conversations with families in settings where taking notes is often difficult. Even so, documentation must be precise, structured, and updated regularly. Many professionals describe documentation as one of the most demanding parts of their work.
The study will investigate how Tandem can reduce that pressure. The AI assistant transcribes the visit, generating structured documentation in real time, and sends it securely to the Electronic Health Record system. Tandem has CE certification as a medical device, compliant with ISO 27001 and ISO 13485, and is already in use in more than 1,000 healthcare organizations across Europe.
Dr Álvaro Navarro Mingorance, pediatrician at Hospital Niño Jesús and President of PEDPAL, highlights the potential impact:
“In pediatric palliative care, home based care requires a continuous coordination effort between professionals and families, in circumstances that vary from one patient to another and during visits that can last for hours. In this context, artificial intelligence applied to documentation can play a radically impactful role.”
The collaboration builds on a clinical study launched by the pediatric palliative care unit at Son Espases, the largest public hospital in the Balearic Islands. The new partnership will extend that work to other hospitals and teams across Spain.
Dr Jorge Pérez Hermilla, Country Director of Tandem Health Spain, describes the opportunity clearly:
“Our technology has shown strong results in outpatient care across many specialties. In pediatric palliative care, there is a clear opportunity to strengthen clinical documentation. The scribe helps professionals capture the most relevant aspects of each home visit with accuracy. Collaborating with PEDPAL on this project, the first of its kind in Europe, is an opportunity to advance a line of research with deep clinical and human impact.”
This project focuses on two outcomes that matter to every team in pediatric palliative care: better documentation and more time with the families who need it most.
