How Tandem and Microsoft are building secure AI for healthcare

When clinicians talk about what they need most, it is rarely new equipment or more funding. What they often say is that they need more time.

Time spent on documentation and admin work adds up quickly. For many, it takes up nearly half the working day. That's time they could have spent listening to patients, thinking about treatment plans, or simply catching their breath between appointments.

At Tandem Health, we saw that problem and decided to act. We built a medical assistant powered by AI that helps reduce the burden of note-taking, so clinicians can stay focused on care. But to do this responsibly, we needed more than just technology that works. We needed a foundation that clinicians and healthcare organizations could trust.

Security and privacy at the core

From day one, data protection has guided how we design Tandem. The assistant runs on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform and processes consultations in real time. Audio is never stored. Notes are not linked to patient identities.

All data stays within Europe and is handled in full compliance with GDPR and national healthcare data laws. We are ISO 27001 certified, Cyber Essentials certified, and compliant with the NHS Data Security and Protection Toolkit. We also do not use personal data to train our AI.

This is not just about compliance. It's about building a product that healthcare professionals can rely on, without having to wonder how it handles sensitive information.

Tandem is now used by more than one thousand healthcare organizations across Europe, including Capio Ramsay Santé in Sweden and NHS teams in the United Kingdom through our partnership with Accurx.
