How Farsund Municipality gave health workers their time back with AI-powered documentation

Blog

In Norway's Farsund Municipality, documentation once consumed entire afternoons. Caseworkers often spent three hours documenting a single visit. Now, the same task takes 10–15 minutes.

The shift came from a six-week pilot with Tandem’s AI scribe, implemented locally with Omilon. Twenty employees across three care teams tested the technology in live conversations with patients. The AI listened, created draft summaries, and let staff edit and approve them in their own words.

The impact was immediate:

  • Up to 80% reduction in documentation time in mental health and youth services
  • Over 50% time savings in administrative and rehabilitation units
  • 400+ patient notes completed during the six-week pilot
  • 2,400 working hours freed per year, equal to nearly two full-time positions
  • 100% of participants said they wanted to keep using the AI scribe

“For me, it’s hard to imagine going back to typing everything myself,” said one health worker. “Now I can focus fully on the client instead of taking notes during visits.”

Employees described more than efficiency gains. They talked about calm. Presence. A sense of finishing the day without the mental load of unfinished notes. “It’s a relief to know the documentation is done when I move on to the next task,” one employee shared.

The Municipal Health Manager summed it up best: “This is the beginning of a new way of working, where people and technology collaborate to solve future welfare challenges.”

After the pilot with Tandem, staff described a noticeable change in their workday. Less time spent catching up on notes, and more energy left for the people they support.
